Is it possible to eliminate cat allergies?
I have been allergic to cats and horses for the past 5 years, or so. I used to own a cat, and I also used to horse back ride regularly. I have always LOVED animals, and this is very heartbreaking to me. I want to pursue my career as a Veterinary Technician, and this is really holding me back. It is also eliminating living opportunities. If anyone knows of how I can at least relieve my allergies enough to work with and around cats, I would really appreciate it. Most of all, I want to know if there are ways to eliminate the allergies.
Thank you.
For cats there is a shampoo that you can wash them in that removes a lot of dander (what you are allergic to). Look at low shedding, low dander breeds of cat (get out your checkbook) like bengals, manx and rexs. There is an allergy free cat breed that was genetically created but its like $3000 per cat! And of course, you can always get a hairless cat and just wipe them down daily.
Otherwise, try using anahistamines like Benedryl or clariton. And ask your doctor about allergy shots which are often very effective. The shots have to be repeated every couple of months, but I don’t think they are too expensive and if you love cats, then it might be the best option!
Good luck!

We have actually found that cat allergies are diminished by simply spending time with cats. It has taken a while, but the allergies have certainly not been as bad as they used to. I’m sure there is a shampoo that you can buy that can be found at petco or pet smart, but if you are not interested in giving an unwilling cat a bath, I would just be patient. The first month or so is rough, but it gets better!

You might try slowly spendin gsmall amounts of time with a cat or horse. 15 minutes with one cat in the begining and work your way up day by day. I do this. I go to the local humane society (or SPCA–a shelter) and play with a cat briefly to help with the allergies. Hope this helps. Also, watch your hands after wards!

You can try visiting an allergy specialist. You might be able get medication or shots to reduce your sensitivity to them. It may not eliminate your allergies completely but at least you can be around them and even handle them.

I am a vet tech and used to have cat allergies really bad as a kid. I have generally grown out of them as I have gotten older, but I also think it is from repeated exposure to cats that I have also become more immune to them.
You may want to contact a dermatologist or your doctor and ask them about low-dose allergen therapy. We do this with dogs all the time. Do allergy test to isolate what they are allergic to, then the allergy company created a low dose shots for the dogs to get. They get very low-dose shots of the very thing they are allergic to. The concentration grdually increases. This gives the body time to build up antibodies to the allergen. Helping them to become immune to what they are allergic to.
My allergy is now very mild. Red, itchy eyes if I forget to wash my hands after handling a cat and occasionally sneezing. But I really think that the frequent exposure to cats has help me build up more of an immunity to their allergens.
If you want a career as a vet tech – Go To School for it. Get a Bachelors of Science degree for it.
Not only will you get great comprehensive & complete training, being licensed will let you perform more medical related tasks than non-licensed techs, and you will be paid more for it.

Yes it is. I used to be very allergic to cats, but developed a natural immunity from having them constantly sleeping in my bed and being in the house. Many people i know have little or no symptoms who originally suffered from allergies.
