Any suggestions for a cat with swollen lips?
One of my cats has developed swollen lips. He also has a cold like symptom- his nose is sometimes stuffy. Other then that he is fine. I am keeping him separate from my others. I believe it might be a form of herpes. I have given him Clavomox and now I am trying Bytril. I have given him L-Lysine, but perhaps I didn’t give him enough because nothing seems to work. I work with a rescue group and know a lot about vet medicine. I have succefully treated many cat ailments. I have seen this symptom before, but I don’t recall how I have treated it. I have not had a chance to discuss this with other members of the group I volunteer with, and thought someone out there can also give me some insite. If anyone out there can tell me what has been prescribed for their cat or any veterinarians out there with some free advise for someone who has spayed/nuetered 1000’s of cats, I would greatly appreciate it.
Newsflash Wisk- Allthough many vet meds and human meds are simalar, I E Clavomax is a lower dosage of the human form of Augmentant, which is a very low dose antibiotic, vet medicine and human medicine are quite different. Although I don’t know a lot about human meds, I have done a lot of research on vet meds.I thought I could find, and still hope to find, someone more knowlwdgable then someone who has done research on "cat food" on this website. By the way, I have never had a cat die because I didn’t know what to feed it, based on your previouse answere, you at one time needed help in that area. Can you explain the causes, symptoms and treatment for say-Feline Infectious Peritonitis–I can, and my vet of several years can attest to that.

Because of my background of working on the other side of the table from a vet doing spays/nueteres and discussing everything in detail with my vet, I would also know the differance between "free advise" that was ligitamate or not.

As a veterinarian the best advice I can give you without having seen your cat myself is that the reason your cat may not be getting better with your current treatment of antibiotics is that you may not be treating his ailment appropriately. There can be many potential causes for your cat’s symptoms including allergies, bacterial infection, viral infection, fungal infection, etc. Some of these require specific treatment (e.g. fungal infections require specific anti-fungal drugs, allergies can’t be treated with antibiotics). So please don’t assume just because your cat is not getting better with treatment that you are not giving him enough. Also one thing to note about Baytril it can potentially cause blindness in cats especially if given at inappropriate dose or for an extended length of time. Hopefully your volunteer group has access to a veterinarian that can take a look at this cat so he/she can decide what would be the best course of treatment and diagnostics for him. Until that happens I wouldn’t recommend treating him yourself.
If you are using plastic bowls they can harbor bacteria. Change to ceramic or stainless steel that are better cleaned. Have you had the cat tested for leukemia and aids? It may be an immune issue also.

Even though you work in the rescue industry prescription veterinary medication shouldn’t be administered without a certain diagnosis. What if one of those has a contraindication and your cat has developed an allergic reaction to them. What would you be able to do. Please contact a vet in these cases if you are not sure before self medicating any animal. This is why a vet has extensive education and is licensed to dispense prescription drugs.
ETA: Based on your previous questions, it appears you obviously do not know a lot about vet medicine or medicine in general. If you did you would’ve known the answers or know how to research them instead of asking on here. Free advice is dangerous for the unsuspected. PLEASE CALL A VET! Your rescue should be working with one already if it’s a licensed organization.

I think the best thing you cvan do is to take kitty to the vet. There are various virusses that could be fatal to the cat ( I don’t know how they are called in English), and which are very contagious.
In Meantime, make sure your cat drinks enough (get a seringe if you need) as cats kidneys are vulnerable, especially when it is sick.
That is all I could advise.

If L-Lysine has no effect, it might not be Herpes. He’s probably allergic to something. Check around the yard for yellow jacket nests, around the the garage for chemicals and around the house. If he goes outdoors, it could be something at your neighbor’s house. Holistic verts prescribe some medications that can help allergies. Why don’t you ask one of them.
